Os dados levantados neste trabalho, aliados a dados de literatura, mostram que a decantação não é uma rota capaz de remover o carbono para o nível necessário a aplicações fotovoltaicas. Os resultados mostram que a alteração no tempo de decantação não afeta significativamente a intensidade da remoção de carbono e a zona refinada do lingote possui teores acima do limite de carbono (43 ppm) definido na norma para o silício de grau solar. Testes de decantação foram realizados a 1.500☌ com uma e seis horas de tratamento. O carbono é uma das impurezas que precisam ser removidas e uma técnica de remoção possível baseia-se na decantação das partículas de carboneto de silício precipitadas no silício líquido. Devido ao aumento da demanda por componentes fotovoltaicos, novos processos de refino têm sido investigados. O material mais utilizado na produção de células solares é um silício metálico de alta pureza produzido a partir do refino de um silício de menor pureza.
